Approach
The ProActive
Ergonomics Approach to addressing repetitive motion injuries is
designed to be effective with both small and large companies as
well as with both geographically centralized and geographically
dispersed organizations. This is accomplished through a melding
of traditional approaches to workplace safety and wellness with
a proven system (the OccuCom® system) that can facilitate
and integrate every step of this process. The four main pillars
of this approach are as follows: surveillance/observation, data
analysis, implementation of controls and evaluation/re-evaluation
of program effectiveness.
Because ergonomics originated in the field of engineering, workspace
combined with task design is the true focus of pure ergonomics.
The working environment and tools, which are available to the
individual, can either encourage better positioning and work efficiency,
or they can lead to at-risk postures and decreased efficiency.
It can be difficult to adopt healthful, productive work practices
if the workspace is not conducive to these goals. At the same
time, fairly innocuous activities if done often enough for long
enough and with sufficient force may result in discomfort or injury.
Information on workspaces and tasks must be gathered through surveillance,
questionnaires and interviews.
Once this information has been collected, it can be analyzed
and compiled into reports and recommendations. These recommendations
are prioritized for a more efficient return on investment. It
is commonly understood that 20% of issues account for 80% of problems.
Prioritizing recommendations makes for more cost-effective solutions.
Some of the controls or “fixes” that can be implemented
include workstation modifications, tool alternatives and employee
education. All of these solutions require quality material (product
or information) applied promptly and professionally. ProActive Ergonomics
is part of the OccuCom® network. Therefore, we can provide
or make available to you the best products and services in the
industry. Association with the OccuCom® network also allows
you to receive recommended products at a substantial discount.
When you work with ProActive Ergonomics you receive competent, local
service, but you are backed by the knowledge and resource benefits
of hundreds of people across the United States.
Once the controls are in place, it is time to evaluate their
effectiveness in alleviating the risk factors observed in the
surveillance phase. The final phase, evaluation/reevaluation,
provides for assessment of the current program and modification
as needed.
